The Iridium 9555 satellite phone

Iridium unveiled its latest satellite phone, the Iridium 9555, in the second half of October 2008.

The main improvement to the previous model, the Iridium 9505a, is its reduced by 30% size and weight. The 9555 is also better at sending short emails and SMS.

Iridium's new satphone is weather resistant, and has an internally retractable antenna. It has a mini-USB port and an integrated speaker phone.

Standby time is up to 30 hours with talk time up to 4 hours.

This does look nice, but we don't yet know what the price of the handheld will be. Iridium has announced that sales of the new handheld are supposed to start in November.
