Inmarsat has been providing satellite communication services since 1979. It was created first to provide solutions to the maritime industry and then expanded to provided aircraft and terrestrial communication services. |
Currently Inmarsat provides several satellite communication services, including:
- BGAN (Broadband Global Area Network) – global IP satellite modem service
- GMDSS – Global Maritime Distress and Safety Services – for ships and aircraft
- ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network) – used for videophone connections, often by media for live reporting from remote areas
- handheld satellite phone service – up to 2010 the ISatPhone covered Asia, Africa and Europe – and global coverage has been added with the release of the ISatPhone Pro (2010).
