Inmarsat has been providing satellite communication services since 1979. It was created first to provide solutions to the maritime industry and then expanded to provided aircraft and terrestrial communication services.
Currently Inmarsat provides several satellite communication services, including:
- BGAN (Broadband Global Area Network) – global IP satellite modem service
- GMDSS – Global Maritime Distress and Safety Services – for ships and aircraft
- ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network) – used for videophone connections, often by media for live reporting from remote areas
- handheld satellite phone service – up to 2010 the ISatPhone covered Asia, Africa and Europe – and global coverage has been added with the release of the ISatPhone Pro (2010).
