The GSP 1700 is Globalstar’s latest handheld. It’s smaller and lighter not only than Globalstar’s earlier satellite phone, but also significantly smaller and nearly two times lighter than both Iridium’s 9505a and Globalstar’s earlier satphone, the GSP-1600.
Screen: 4×12 character, backlit, color displayBattery: 4 hours of talk time or 10-36 hours of standby time (depending on whether the phone is in stow mode or not).
Due to Globalstar’s problems the GSP 1700 and other Globalstar satellite phones have been considerably cheaper in 2008-2010 than other satellite phones.
Globalstar has announced that the GSP-1700 handsets will be compatible with Globalstar’s second generation satellite phone network, which will become fully functionable in 2011.
