GEO (Geostationary Earth Orbit)

GEO (Geostationary Earth Orbit) is one of the highest orbits that commercial satellites are placed on. It is a special type of orbit, as objects that are on GEO rotate with the same speed as the Earth rotates, thus from the Earth they appear as hovering in space. This is very useful for communication purposes, though it has limitations of its own (latency caused by the long distance from Earth to the satellites). Thuraya and ICO have placed their satellites in Geostationary Earth Orbit.
